For centuries, humans have prospered from the ocean’s bountiful supply of natural resources. From the abundant supply of fresh fish and sea food to the vast amounts of sand and marine gravel used to build our country’s infrastructure, we have learned to use the ocean to our advantage. The sea is one of the greatest sources of vital nutrients, trace elements, oligo minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids, so it comes as no surprise that the cosmetic industry has harnessed the power of these marine ingredients to suit the vital needs of our skin. Whether it’s premature ageing, sensitivity, pigmentation or acne, the ocean gifts us with a wealth of essential ingredients to treat and repair the skin’s condition.

Seaweed is categorised into four different classes, determined by their colour. Each seaweed type has specific properties and health benefits for both our skin and our bodies.

BLUE SEAWEED of which Spirulina is the most common. You are sure to have heard of this marine supplement, often blended with banana and kiwis for a more palatable taste. Pure spirulina is a fresh water algae, growing in the alkaline crater lakes of extinct volcanoes in the pristine regions of Hawaii and South America. The distinct advantage of Spirulina is its richness in iron, protein and Vitamin B12 which aid in skin strength and ceramide production.

GREEN SEAWEED grows tall, often reaching the surface of the ocean. Known for its firming and nourishing effect, green seaweed is perfectly compatible with a dry, mature skin.

BROWN SEAWEED is arguably the most versatile of all seaweeds, the most popular strains being Laminaria, Fucus and Ascophyllum. Brown seaweeds possess powerful stimulating, slimming and detoxifying properties, and also provide the skin with incredible elasticity. Fucus Vesiculosis is used for the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema, contact dermatitis and inflamed acne as a fundamental nutrient boost for the skin cells.

RED SEAWEED is found on the ocean floor, tiny and small and rarely exposed to light. Densely packed with marine trace elements and minerals, red seaweeds are also known as the “skin normaliser”. Red seaweed species such as Chondrus Crispus rebalance the skin, feeding it with nutrients, moisture and nourishment

Seaweed, algae and seawater share an amazing affinity with the body’s plasma. Our mineral composition is in many ways comparable to seawater, which explains the incredible ease of distribution of seaweed’s active ingredients in the body. Each variation of seaweed contains an individual cocktail of elements. Once the cellular wall of the seaweed is burst by crushing or micronization, its components are released, and by osmosis will be absorbed into the skin. This process is a wonder in itself, through osmosis the body will absorb the minerals and trace elements that are lacking and leave what it doesn’t need behind. As the blood circulates, the capillaries will then distribute these elements to the skin and vital organs where they will then be put to use.

The science of skin care is ever evolving, advancements in ingredient research and development has seen the industry sky rocket to new levels that were inconceivable even 5 years ago. Today’s technology has enabled the consumer to be more educated than ever before, with an endless supply of information accessible with just the touch of a few buttons. Clients are demanding faster, more noticeable results from their skin care, yet still the demand for naturally derived ingredients remains. This is where marine actives play a huge role, by meeting the needs of both.

From the sea we are able to harness some of the most dynamic skin care ingredients. We can extract even the most complicated of elements such as plant based Stem Cells from sea and costal botanics to marine collagen and elastin found in the skin of fish. Not to mention the abundance of skin loving minerals and trace elements found in seaweed and sea water. All in all, marine based skin care is essential for regulating skin cell function, fortifying nutrients, restoring hydration levels and combating the ageing process. Need we say more!?
